If you did not know, Drighlington
is famous for a battle that took place in 1643,during the civil war. It was the
Battle of Adwalton Moor. Adwalton Moor is also known as Atherton Moor but not
many people know this. Lord Fairfax who was fighting for Oliver Cromwell was
defeated here and he and his army made their escape by going in the direction
of Birstall.
It is also believed
that at Three Road Ends in Drighlington there once stood an Inn where Queen
Elizabeth the first is said to have stayed.
If you walk in the
direction of Bradford you will pass near the village of Tong which is mentioned
in the Doomesday Book. The village has changed little over many centuries and
you can still see the old Pin Fold where stray animals were kept. The Norman
church with its tower boasts a three tier pulpit where the vicar still preaches
from. The pews have doors into the aisles. The Tempest family were the Lords of
the Manor for a long time. They resided in Tong Hall, which is a seventeenth
century brick building.
A little nearer to
Bradford you will pass through Westgate Hill. This was once called Wisket Hill
which is a reference to fighting here during the Civil War. A lot of artefacts
were found in these fields when excavations started during the building of Tong
Comprehensive and Cardinal Hinsley Schools
