THE LIFE OF A RETIRED ENGINEERING MANAGER
From being a busy,
constantly on call, engineering employee, I now find myself having time on my
hands. What to do to pass the days along?
I have finally decided to go back to school to catch up with the
new technology that has become commonplace with the young people of today, such
as Mobile phones, DVD’S, and mainly computers, in all their various forms. I must say here that although the young
ones seem to find it easy going, I find it terribly hard to make sense of what
is basically a totally new concept to my personal experience. Not that I didn’t know about computers, its
just that I had never worked on one, or had the basic principles explained to
me in such a way that I could not only make sense of the concept, but learn to
put it to practical use. This does not
mean I am finding it easy to use, but at least I am beginning to appreciate
some of the logical rules one needs to follow to reach the objective.
For the last few years of my working life I started a one man light
haulage business as I had stopped working on my normal job due to developing a
stress symptom, and needed something to keep me occupied till I was ready to
retire, which was also less demanding mentally, and, as I was reasonably fit,
not too demanding physically.
I must say that working for myself, at my pace, and doing only the
jobs that I thought were right for me, were the happiest and least stressful of
my entire working life.
I am convinced that this
was entirely due to me making, and living with, all the decisions that I had to
make on an almost day to day basis.
I would
recommend it to anyone feeing under stress.
